Continental Conti Tube MTB 28/29 binnenband

The Continental Conti Tube MTB 28/29 is an inner tube that covers both 28 and 29 inch wheels. That flexible size suits MTBs and some trekking bikes.

Why the right inner tube?

An inner tube has three properties that matter: size, valve and material. The size is printed on your tyre, for example 700x28 or 29 x 2.4. A tube covers a range, such as 700x28 to 32c, and your tyre has to sit inside it. Too narrow and the tube stretches too much, too wide and it folds.

The valve is Presta (slim, with a small nut) or Schrader (wide, like a car tyre). Road rims usually take Presta. The length must stick out of the rim far enough: 40 mm for shallow rims, 60 mm or more for deep aero rims, or you cannot get a pump head on.

Butyl is the standard material: tough, affordable and easy to patch. TPU tubes are much lighter (often 30 to 50 g against 90 to 130 g for butyl), pack smaller and roll slightly easier, but they are less forgiving of poor fitting and can only be patched with a special patch, or not at all.

A good spare in your saddle bag is often the easiest way to get home calmly. A small TPU spare weighs next to nothing.

Choose it if

  • You ride 29er wheels and want a Continental tube in the right diameter.
  • Your bike has 28 inch wheels with wide tyres.
  • You ride clinchers and want a good spare in your bag.
  • You want to ride light and are considering TPU.

Choose something else if

  • For narrow road tyres of 23 to 28 mm, a road tube is the better fit.
  • You ride tubeless: you do not need a tube, except as an emergency spare.
  • You have tubular wheels: a tube will not fit.

How to change an inner tube

  1. Remove the wheel

Open the brake or quick release, take the wheel out of the frame and let all the air out of the tyre.

  2. Release the tyre

Work one side of the tyre off the rim by hand or with tyre levers. Pull the tube out and check the tyre for the cause of the puncture.

  3. Check the tyre

Carefully run your fingers along the inside and remove thorns or glass. Check the rim tape too.

  4. Fit the new tube

Inflate the new tube slightly, pass the valve through the hole and tuck it into the tyre. Work the tyre back on without pinching the tube.

  5. Inflate and refit

Inflate to the pressure you want, check the tyre is seated evenly and refit the wheel.

Good to know

  • The title gives no valve or width, so compare with the size on your tyre.
  • The width range on the box must match your tyre.
  • Check the valve length before you buy, especially with deep rims.
  • A Presta valve has a small nut that you loosen before inflating.
  • TPU is sensitive to sharp edges and needs careful fitting.
  • A tube slowly loses air through its wall over time. Store it flat and clean.
