Wax-based chain lube for dry weather
Zéfal Extra Dry Wax, pack of 2
Extra Dry Wax is a Zéfal lubricant that dries on your chain into a thin film of wax. The outside of the chain stays dry and picks up little dust and grit. This pack holds two 120 ml bottles.

Why Extra Dry Wax?
Lube your chain with ordinary oil and your fingers are black the next morning. That oil stays wet. Dust and grit stick to it, and the mix grinds away between the links.
Extra Dry Wax works differently. The wax is suspended in water. Once applied, the water evaporates and a dry film of wax stays on the links and rollers. Wax is slick, so the chain runs smoothly. The outside stays dry, so little dirt clings to it. Zéfal describes it the same way: a clean, quiet drivetrain with a film that protects against corrosion.
The trade-off is the weather. A wax film lasts less well in the wet than oil does. That is why the product is called Dry. Zéfal itself says it is ideal in dry weather. If you rode in the rain or rinsed your bike with water, apply it again.
If you mostly ride on dry days and like a clean chain, that is a fair trade. Your hands stay tidier. So does your trouser leg.
How it compares with other chain lube
There are four ways to lubricate a chain. Each suits a type of weather and a way of working.
| Type | How it works | Staying clean | Wet weather | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wet lube (oil) | Stays liquid and clings to the links. | Picks up dust and grit. | Strong. Hard to wash off. | Re-apply often and wipe the chain. |
| Dry lube (PTFE) | A solvent evaporates and leaves a dry film. | Cleaner than oil. | Weak. Rain washes it off. | Needs frequent top-ups. |
| Drip waxThis product | Wax in water. The water evaporates and leaves a dry wax film. | Clean. The outside stays dry. | Fair. Re-apply after a wet ride. | Degrease first, then let it dry for a few hours. |
| Hot wax | The chain is dipped in a bath of molten wax. | Very clean. | Fair. | Most work: remove the chain, melt the wax, dip. |
A general guide. Brands and formulas differ.
Choose it if
- You mostly ride on dry days and want a clean chain.
- You want no black marks on your hands and trousers.
- You have two bikes or want a spare bottle.
- You are happy to degrease the chain properly before you start.
Choose something else if
- You ride in the rain or on wet roads regularly. Zéfal makes Extra Wet Lube for that.
- Your chain is full of oil and you do not want to degrease it. Zéfal asks for a degreased chain.
- You want to be able to leave quickly. The wax needs a few hours to dry first.
How to use dry wax
Degrease the chain
Use a degreaser and a brush. Rinse the chain and dry it with a cloth.
Shake and drip
Shake the bottle. Drip a moderate amount on the inside of the chain while you turn the pedals.
Wipe off the excess
Take off what the chain does not need with a cloth.
Let it dry
The wax is white at first. Wait until the colour has gone. Zéfal advises doing this a few hours before your ride.
Next time
Is there already Extra Dry Wax on the chain? Then you do not need to degrease. Wipe the old wax off with a dry cloth and start again at the dripping.
Good to know
- The 500 km (road) and 200 km (mountain bike) figures come from Zéfal, for dry weather. Your own figure depends on your route, the weather and how clean the chain was.
- If there is still oil on your chain, start by degreasing. Zéfal asks for a clean, dry chain.
- Let the wax dry before you ride off.
